Putin Praises Trump, Signals Russia’s Readiness for Dialogue
While most world leaders promptly congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election, Russian President Vladimir Putin remained silent. Recently, however, he too extended his congratulations.
Putin praised Trump’s courage, recalling an incident when Trump faced an assassination attempt during a campaign rally. Putin expressed that Moscow is ready for dialogue with the newly elected U.S. president.
In his first public statement since Trump’s victory, Putin said, “He showed true courage during an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally in July. In my opinion, he acted bravely, embodying the qualities of a true leader.” Putin shared this praise at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Russia.
Putin further stated, “During his campaign, Trump expressed a desire to restore relations with Russia, which deserves attention.” In his campaign promises, Trump vowed to bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours if elected. However, he did not elaborate on how he plans to end Europe’s largest land war since WWII.
In his victory speech, Trump declared, “I will govern by a simple principle: promises made, promises kept. We will keep our commitments.” Trump has criticized the U.S. for spending billions supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia.
Meanwhile, Putin cautiously remarked, “I am not sure what will happen next. I have no clue.”
In response to a question, Putin confirmed his readiness to reconnect and engage in talks with Trump’s administration if it so chooses.
Both Trump and Russia have repeatedly dismissed Western media claims that Trump is a “Russian agent.” Moscow has also denied allegations from the U.S. that Russia interfered in the 2024 presidential election or spread misinformation to create chaos.
Russian officials state that from 2017 to 2021, during his first term, Trump was tough on Russia. While Putin is open to re-establishing ties, the decision lies with Washington. Putin also described China as a Russian “ally.”
When asked about Vice President Kamala Harris’s remark that “Putin would eat Trump for lunch,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov laughed, saying, “Putin does not eat people.”
